Does my soil have good drainage or bad

Soil will have drainage problems for several reasons. The most common reason being a high clay content. One simple way to test for poor drainage is to dig a hole and fill it with water. If water is still in the hole after one hour then you have soil that does not drain well.

If you dig a hole and put any soil or growing container in the hole you could develop the conditions pictured above. This area of water logged soil will be low in Oxygen and can result in dead roots. Areas that are exposed to runoff or over watering will very likely have this problem.
