Before you place a plant bed it is important to
know how water will travel on your property.

Below is a drawing of a garden area.

Water Flow.gif (25709 bytes)

If this was a site with poor drainage, such as heavy clay soil, a plant bed in Site B would be water logged every time it rained. Site A in heavy clay soil would only become water logged if it was over watered or there were high rainfall.

Now if the site was well drained, such as sandy soil, a plant bed in Site A could be dry. It may require frequent watering. In sandy soil a plant bed at Site B would have a better chance of being moist.

It should also be noted that if you select a site where high volumes of water flow when it rains, the water could cause erosion problems in your plant bed. Areas that develop fast moving water when it rains should have a permanent ground cover. Or they should have a solid cover such as brick, stone, cement, etc.
